Service self-insured employer
Are you an employer and are you considering becoming self-insurer for the Sickness Benefits Act or WGA (Work resumption of partial disability)? Then you are opting for more control over absenteeism, reintegration and the associated financial burden. As an own-risk carrier, you not only have the responsibility, but also the control.
What does self-insurance mean?
When you are self-insurer for the Sickness Benefits Act and/or WGA, you have the responsibility to support (former) employees until they have possibilities for the labor market again or, if this is not feasible, they enter the WGA. In the latter case, they fall within your WGA risk. In addition to guidance, you are also responsible for paying their Sickness Benefits.
If you are self-insured, you pay less in disability premiums. You choose to keep a grip on absenteeism and influence the reintegration policy of your (former) employees.
Financial impact for employers
As a self-insurer, you as an employer will be financially responsible for your absent staff for 12 years: the first two years through the Wet Verbetering Poortwachter and/or the premium Werkhervattingskas Ziektewet. In the following 10 years, you will be additionally burdened in case of inflow by the premium WGA-flex and WGA-fix.
If you are not self-insured for the Sickness Benefits Act, you leave this task to the UWV and pay for it through differential premiums.
To be self-insured or not?
When you opt for self-insurance, you run the risk of paying for 10 years for an employee who may have been employed by you for only a few months.
It is therefore important to be well informed about what suits your organization's financial situation and about how to minimize the claims burden of absent (former) employees. This is not an easy consideration and it requires specific knowledge and skills to apply social laws and regulations.
