Is an absence interview mandatory?

An absence interview is not required by law, but it is highly recommended by both employers and occupational health and safety services. It helps to discuss recovery, employability and any bottlenecks in a timely manner. In case of long-term absenteeism , a sick leave interview is also part of the steps of the Gatekeeper Improvement Act.

What do you discuss during an absence interview?

In an absence interview, you will discuss the causes of absenteeism to the extent the employee is willing to share them, the expectation of recovery, opportunities for work resumption and any support the employer can provide. The conversation focuses on work and reintegration, not medical details.

What is the purpose of an absenteeism interview?

The aim is to gain clarity aboutemployability, reintegration opportunities, and any obstacles. It contributes to a faster recovery and helps employers to comply with their obligations under the Dutch Gatekeeper Improvement Act.

What is the job of an absenteeism coach?

An absence coach assists both employer and employee during the absence process. Consider:

  • monitoring the obligations of the Gatekeeper Improvement Act
  • advising on reintegration steps
  • conducting interviews
  • timely involvement of the company doctor
  • coordinating communications

The absence coach ensures that the process is careful, people-oriented and in accordance with the law.

What may you ask in a frequent absenteeism call?

The EeU may ask questions aboutwork content,tax,obstacles at work, andopportunities for employability. What is not allowed: questions about diagnosis, treatment, or medical details. That information is covered by medical confidentiality and may only company doctor processed by the company doctor .

Can I take vacation during illness?

In many cases, employees are allowed to take vacation during illness, but the employer must give permission for this. The company doctor may company doctor whether vacation will hinder recovery. In some situations, vacation days are not deducted, for example, when someone is completely unable to work.
