In evaluations with our clients, I see an increasingly urgent problem: increasing psychological absenteeism from work. There is an increase in stress-related complaints and long-term absenteeism. Often the focus is on curative interventions - coaching, psychological interventions and reintegration advice. But what if we could actually address the problems preventively, and thus prevent them from escalating?
A central place for prevention
prevention deserves a central place in every organization. This means looking beyond the signs of overwork and actively investing in a healthy work environment.
By "controlling," which in this case means giving your people attention before something goes wrong, absenteeism is often preventable.
Open conversations and trust
Create a culture where employees feel safe to discuss anything. "Checking in" here means that as a manager, you actively seek space for open conversations. Regular check-ins and real listening make a big difference. When employees feel their well-being is taken seriously, they are more likely to seek solutions and intervene themselves before it's too late.
Proactive support
Don't wait for employees to drop out. "Monitoring" here can prevent you from regularly gauging your team's needs and looking together for appropriate solutions.
Customization is often necessary because each employee's situation can be different. Making small adjustments and discussing problems can already help. By actively responding to your team's signals, together you can invest in sustainable solutions and prevent as much absenteeism as possible.
Sustainable leadership
Managers play a key role in employee employability. Train managers in spotting incipient complaints and having constructive conversations. But even better, qualify managers on their natural talents and invest in their development. "Controlling" here also means that leaders should pay attention not to the performance of their employees, but to their well-being.
A team that feels supported remains resilient. When managers proactively pay attention to all members of their team, it ensures optimization in an engaged, cohesive and proactive team.
Balancing workload and job satisfaction
Look critically at the division of duties and responsibilities. Is there enough room for recovery? "Controlling" means ensuring a work climate in which employees can not only be productive, but also feel comfortable and recharged. An organization that prioritizes job satisfaction has less absenteeism and higher productivity. By investing in prevention and actively "checking in" by giving your people attention, you prevent employees from dropping out unnecessarily and build a vital work environment.
