When an employee calls in sick, it initially seems like a loss. But at De Arbodienst we believe: absenteeism is not a problem, it is a management opportunity. By looking differently at employability and the underlying causes of absenteeism, you not only help your
employee, but also your organization.
To do that requires insight. Because not every absenteeism is the same. We explain the difference between the types of absenteeism and how to manage them proactively.
Types of absenteeism: by duration
Short absenteeism
A few days' absence due to flu or migraine, for example. Innocent in itself, but beware: repeated short absenteeism can be a signal. For example, from stress or dissatisfaction at work.
Medium absenteeism
Between one and six weeks. We often see a medical reason here, but psychosocial factors can also play a role. Moving quickly is crucial here to prevent long-term absenteeism .
Long-term absenteeism
If absenteeism lasts longer than six weeks, we speak of long-term absenteeism. This requires a structured approach, such as a plan of action, use of a case manager and direction on reintegration.
Types of absenteeism: based on perception and behavior
At De Arbodienst , we look beyond "sick or not sick. We also distinguish the following colors of absenteeism:
White absenteeism
The employee is demonstrably sick. For example, after surgery or in bed with a fever. There is no discussion of employability.
Gray absenteeism
The employee does not feel fit, but may still be able to work (partially). Here lies an opportunity: with the right conversation and appropriate adjustment, you can prevent dropout.
Black absenteeism
The employee calls in sick without a medical reason. This is exceptional, but requires alertness and open dialogue.
Pink absenteeism
The employee is at work, but is not functioning optimally due to health issues. This "hidden absenteeism" can lead to mistakes, exhaustion and - eventually - failure. Timely detection makes all the difference.
absenteeism = chance of improvement
At De Arbodienst , we believe in prevention above all else. Every signal of absenteeism is an opportunity to improve: in autonomy, workload distribution, culture or leadership. By viewing absenteeism not as an administrative burden, but as a valuable source of information, you help your team move forward.
We help organizations understand, influence and prevent absenteeism . Not just with numbers and processes, but with people work. Because behind every absenteeism is a story.
