Engaged employees are very important in an organization. Not only do they perform better, they are intrinsically motivated and remain loyal to the organization. Engaged employees are like prizes; you don't win them just like that. It requires a huge investment from the organization and that investment starts at Onboarding.

What is onboarding?

Onboarding is literally the first step a new employee takes on boarding the organization. During this process, the employee is introduced to the organizational culture , new colleagues, the way of working and most importantly the vision. The goal is to familiarize the employee with the organization and instill the right knowledge and skills for a flying start. If all goes well, at this point you are convinced of the employee's suitability, and suitable employees you want to retain.

This is how you as an employer ensure a successful onboarding:

1. Creating the right impression

First impressions matter, even in the workplace. The employee probably went through an intensive application process and it finally led to that dream job. He/she wants to keep that feeling, and positive first experiences make the employee feel proud to be part of the organization.

2. Clearly communicate expectations

As a new employee, there can be a lot on your mind; a lot of information, new impressions and new faces. Clear communication about expectations can help make you feel confident. Include the employee as much as possible in what to expect. This way, the employee knows what he/she is working toward and what the road will look like.

3. Link personal goals to organizational goals

Everyone has personal goals. By paying attention to these as well, you discover where someone's passion and talents lie. Valuable information because by mapping talents, the right capacities within an organization can also be utilized.

4. Adequate resources

A good balance in task demands and resources leads to inspired employees. Resources come in many forms such as clear instructions, feedback, colleagues or feelings of autonomy. So don't just point new employees to these resources, make sure they are sufficiently present.

5. Evaluate with the employee

It is good that you spend a lot of time and attention to the process of onboarding, but in this, do not forget the opinion of the (new) employees. Also find out if employees missed something, or actually liked something. This way you can make better use of your time and get more benefit from your investment.
